Farewell to a British Artistic Icon: David Hockney (1937–2026)

David Hockney (1937–2026)

The art world has lost one of its most celebrated and influential figures with the passing of David Hockney, who died in London on 11 June 2026 at the age of 88.

Born in Bradford on 9 July 1937, Hockney became one of Britain's most recognisable artists, known for his vibrant use of colour, distinctive style and remarkable ability to find beauty in everyday life. Over a career spanning more than six decades, he created works that captured the imagination of people around the world and secured his place as one of the most important artists of his generation.

For many, David Hockney's name instantly brings to mind bright swimming pools, sunlit Californian scenes and landscapes bursting with colour. Yet his work extended far beyond any single subject. Whether painting portraits, countryside views or city scenes, he had a unique gift for making familiar places feel fresh, joyful and full of life.

One of his most iconic works, A Bigger Splash (1967), remains a defining image of modern art. The painting captures a fleeting moment as water erupts from a swimming pool, freezing a split second in time with striking simplicity. It became a symbol of Hockney's unique vision and his fascination with light, perspective and observation.

Throughout his career, Hockney never stopped exploring. He embraced new techniques and technologies, constantly finding different ways to express his creativity. From painting and drawing to photography and digital art, his curiosity helped him remain one of the most innovative artists of his time.

Beyond his artistic achievements, Hockney inspired countless artists, students and art enthusiasts. His work encouraged people to slow down, look more carefully and appreciate the beauty found in everyday moments. He showed that extraordinary art can emerge from ordinary life when viewed with curiosity and imagination.

Today, his work can be found in galleries, museums and private collections across the globe, ensuring that his legacy will continue to be shared for generations to come. While his passing marks the end of an extraordinary life, the impact of his art remains as powerful as ever.

David Hockney leaves behind more than paintings. He leaves behind a way of seeing the world — one filled with colour, curiosity, joy and wonder.

He will be greatly missed, but his work will continue to inspire artists and art lovers for many years to come.
