Artist Profile: Stanley Chow

Stanley Chow was born in 1974 and raised in Manchester, England. He was raised by his parents who emigrated from Hong Kong to England. He grew up around a chip shop and he has said in an interview that living in that environment helped shape him into an artist.

He went to school at the King’s School in Macclesfield and during his school years, he felt inspired by his sixth-form art teacher who was also an illustrator. After school, Stanley went on to study art at Swindon College of Art and this college course included an exchange placement in Lyon, France.

His early career included work with teen magazine companies, “Just Seventeen” and “Sugar”, and then once he was gifted a computer by his dad. This led him onto beginning his digital work. This led him to bigger and better opportunities such as a poster and album cover for The White Stripes’ Meg and Jack White. This collaboration led to a Grammy Award nomination!

Stanley’s work began to get noticed; he was handed some fantastic opportunities. Here are just a few of the fantastic pieces of work that he has created over the years:

  • Portraits of Andy Burnham, Freddie Mercury, Eric Cantona, The Beatles, Dolly Parton, and many more.

  • ‘Get Me There’ Travel Card Scheme and promotional posters.

  • In 2014, he launched his first UK solo exhibition called ‘Takeaway’ which took place at Manchester’s Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art in the Northern Quarter.

  • He was invited back in early 2016 for the 30th Anniversary celebrations. This is where he presented his exhibition ‘InStangram’.

  • He is a massive Manchester United fan, and he did some work with Sir Alex Ferguson.

He is a Mancunian through and through and this is reflected in his paintings. His love for the city can be seen through his portfolio of Affleck's Palace, The Govan Boy, Alan Turing, and the many Manchester musicians.
