Painting Legends: The Life and Achievements of The Notorious B.I.G

Born Christopher George Latore Wallace but known professionally as The Notorious B.I.G, Biggie Smalls or simply Biggie, it’s safe to say that the R&B music space was thankful for the work of this legendary rapper. With roots in New York rap and gangsta rap, Biggie is thought to be one of the greatest rappers of his time despite his relatively short music career.

He was signed to Bad Boy Records in 1993 and his debut album “Ready to Die” was released the following year to widespread critical acclaim. Overnight, Biggie became a worldwide success and set the bar high for future rap artists. This managed to restore the New York scene during a time when West Coast hip hop music was dominating and he went on to earn the 1995 Billboard Music Awards’ Rapper of the Year.

Success was short-lived, however as Biggie became enthralled in the escalating feud between the East Coast and West Coast hip hop scenes, and in 1997 he was murdered during a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles. His second album “Life After Death” was released two weeks later and went on to reach the Number One spot on the Billboard 200 charts.

Despite his untimely death, The Notorious B.I.G managed to solidify a legacy that lives on till this day. Rolling Stone went on to call him ‘the greatest rapper that ever lived’ and Billboard named him ‘the greatest rapper of all time’. He was even inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020, ensuring that his brief but significant career will be a part of history for many more years.
