Artist Profile: Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent Willem Van Gogh has become one of the most influential painters of all time. Across the space of a decade, he created approximately 2,100 pieces of art most of which have been dated from the last 2 years of his life.

He was born on 30th March 1853 and passed away on 29th July 1890. After his death, his work became some of the most popular pieces of art across the Western art scene.

Many of his original works are now scattered around some of the world’s best museums and there is a great selection to view in Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum.

Some of his most famous paintings include:

· Starry Night

· Vase with 15 Sunflowers

· Irises

· Almond Blossoms

· His self-portraits

Even though his paintings are extremely successful now, during his time as an artist he didn’t sell anywhere near the number of paintings he did after his death. He was deemed a mad-man and mentally unstable. This was due to his severe depression and mental health problems which led him to ill health and even psychotic episodes.

His expressive style and storytelling is exactly why people today admire Van Gogh not only as an artist but also as a person. His use of colour and composition creates such emotion and expresses how he viewed life through his perspective.
