Artist Profile: Jony Ive

Sir Jony (Jonathan) Paul Ive KBE is a British designer. He is the former chief design officer of Apple Inc. From 1997 until 2019. Jony Ive was born on 27th February 1967 in Chingford, London. His love of cars made him aspire to become a designer.

Career

After a year of working alongside Robert Weaver, Jony Ive joined a design agency called Tangerine in Hoxton Square. Ive was unhappy with the way his employers were rejecting his ideas and designs. In 1990, his agency tried to recruit a new business, Apple. During the early 1990s, Apple became a client of the Tangerine agency and became a fan of Ive’s work.

He was formally recruited to Apple full-time in 1992. This was a big shift in not only his career but also his personal life. He made the move from the UK to California to begin this exciting career opportunity.

His first design made a breakthrough with the Newton MessagePad 110. From 1992 to 2019, Ive created many well-known Apple products from the iMac to the Apple Watch.

In 2003, Jonathan Ive began his role as a Royal Designer for the Royal Family. Alongside this incredible role, he was also awarded honorary doctorates at Oxford, Cambridge, and the London Royal College of Art.

Jony Ive is the creator of the 2023 Royal Coronation of His Majesty, King Charles III. You will begin to spot this official emblem around Britain during the lead-up to the 6th of May.

This coronation’s emblem pays homage to His Majesty’s admiration of the natural world intertwining the national flowers of the four nations of the United Kingdom:

· England- Rose

· Northern Ireland- Shamrock

· Wales- Daffodil

· Scotland- Thistle

Across the nation, we will be seeing lots of different art and craft projects to commemorate the coronation and we can’t wait to see what you all create!
